Maivys Longa, OD

After graduating from Hialeah High School with honors, Maivys started her pre-med Associates Degree at Miami Dade College(MDC). While at MDC Maivys was on the Dean’s list frequently until graduation on 2013. Maivys completed her requirements for Optometry school at Florida International University (FIU) perusing a Bachelors Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. While in FIU she had the privilege to work at Pasteur Medical Center. It is a clinic in South Florida that has most medical specialist all under one roof for Medicare patients. There, Maivys had the opportunity to work side-by-side with doctors from different specialties.

Maivys is part of the inaugural class of 2020 at Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). She has been on the Dean’s list and President’s list. Maivys was one of the four students in her class elected by KYCO’s Dean to write about her journey through Optometry school, with the purpose of reaching future optometry students. While in KYCO, Maivys was a student tutor helping students and professors. She graduated with the ability to practice Optometry in the full scope of practice able to perform certain laser, and peri-ocular surgical procedures in this state that are not allowed in most of the states around the U.S. Also, Dr. Longa will be able to manage disease such as diabetes and hypertension that can affect the eyes to providing glasses prescription, contact lenses and specialty contact lenses. Dr. Longa is very excited about providing her Spanish and English communication skills to the Bluegrass Community.
